The Transportation Planning Program plays an active role in developing both present and future transportation solutions for the CMRPC region. Responsible for coordinating both short and long term transportation planning activities, CMRPC works with the local communities, where many needs are identified, as well as with the Executive Office of Transportation (EOT) seeking to:

  • Encourage an efficient, economical, and safe multi-modal transportation system
  • Maintain and improve a coordinated transportation planning process
  • Minimize the environmental effects of the transportation system while improving air quality

The Transportation Planning Program provides the staff for the Central Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization (CMMPO). Bringing together the EOT, the Massachusetts Highway Department, the Worcester Regional Transit Authority, and CMRPC with local officials, the CMMPO ensures the planning program is federally compliant to receive transportation funds for the region. As staff, CMRPC is responsible for preparation of the following CMMPO documents:

NEW: Draft 2010 UPWP - for public review

You Move Massachusetts - Statewide Transportation Plan - Phase 1-Interim Report

For more information on these four documents visit the Central Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization web page.

The Transportation Planning Program carries out a variety of activities, including:

  • Periodic traffic counting on the region's highways
  • Congestion management
  • Local pavement management
  • Highway related safety activities
  • Transit and paratransit systems planning
  • Corridor planning studies for potential major new transportation facilities

The Transportation Planning Committee advises the CMRPC and the CMMPO on major transportation policy and project concerns.
