Geographic Information Systems

A State Designated Regional GIS Service Center

A Member of MARGIS

CMRPC's GIS Services Are Here To Help Your Community

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program at CMRPC is a State Designated Regional Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Service Center. The status was designated in 1999 by the Commonwealth’s Executive Office of Environmental Affairs Office of Geographic and Environmental Information.

CMRPC's GIS staff provides overall coordination and planning, data management and development, and technical assistance and training for GIS activity within the region. CMRPC has both the equipment and technical expertise to fulfill this role for your community. CMRPC is continually developing, obtaining, and enhancing spatial data relevant to the forty (40) communities of the region. The GIS staff provides services using data layers from our spatial data library, those provided by federal, state, municipal, and private data sources as well as custom data sets for your GIS needs. CMRPC has been expanding its expertise in this field for over to 15 years.

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based tool designed specifically for the integration, manipulation, analyses, management, and mapping of various geographic features. A geographic feature can be represented as a point (i.e. fire hydrant location), a line (i.e. stream or road centerline) or polygon (i.e. parcel boundary or water body). A GIS stores, manages, analyzes, and displays geographic content and associated characteristics (referred to as attribute data) using a real world coordinate system (i.e. Massachusetts Stateplane or Latitude and Longitude). This provides the user with the ability to assess, evaluate, and implement a variety of alternatives within a decision-making process.
