The 2011 Sustainable Neighborhood Road Design Guidebook is the result of a joint venture between the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association and the Massachusetts Homebuilders Association. Endorsed by Mass Audubon, the Guidebook includes the latest in sustainable road design best practices including low impact development techniques, design and construction guidelines. The Guidebook is available for download at: http://www.apa-ma.org/resources/publications/nrb-guidebook.
Its focus is on local residential neighborhood streets, an area that is under the control and influence of the Commonwealth’s municipalities, and looks at neighborhood streets as more than just pathways for vehicles, but also pedestrians and bicycles. The benefits of sustainable road design are many and well detailed within the guidebook, and are for both residents and developers. The collaboration between homebuilders and planners is commendable.
The workshop speakers include Chris Kluchman, AICP, Town of Westford; Michael J. Scott, PE, Waterman Design Associates.
